Hilton and Moss are pleased to be able to present this unrestored example of a LHD Mercedes W180 220S ‘Ponton’ Cabriolet. The car was brought to us in a stripped-down condition after having been in the hands of another restorer for many years, who had failed to make progress with the project. Our client had wished to carry out a full restoration, however, he has subsequently run out of funds to complete the project and would like to sell the car in its current condition as-is. The car is largely complete, with both axles, engine, gearbox, radiator, most of the drivetrain and most of the interior present, although requiring re-assembly. There area a small number of components to be sourced as the originals are either missing or un-serviceable, of which we have a full list. With just shy of 3,500 coupe and cabriolet W180 220S Pontons produced, compared to over 55,000 saloons, the range-topping 220S cabriolet is the rarest and most desirable of the W180 chassis code. This presents a unique opportunity to acquire a rare car in an unrestored condition, and as such allows a prospective buyer to complete the car to their own specification and taste. With the rapidly increasing price of the 190SL and 300SL models in recent years, this presents an opportunity to acquire a car before the market catches up to the rarity and potential appreciation of this undervalued model.
