Description
Few vehicles in automotive history have captured the public’s imagination like the Volkswagen Type 2. Introduced in 1950 following the overwhelming success of the VW Beetle, the Type 2, also known as the Transporter, Microbus, or Kombi, was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for a versatile, affordable utility vehicle. Originally conceived by Dutch VW importer Ben Pon, the concept was simple. A forward-control van that could transport goods or people with the same bulletproof reliability as the Beetle.
By the early 1960s, the Type 2 had evolved into an array of configurations, including the now-iconic ‘Split-Screen’ variant, so named for its distinctive two-piece front windscreen. The 15-window Deluxe model, like the example offered here, was positioned as the premium people-mover in the lineup, featuring extra side and corner windows, chrome detailing, and additional trim that made it as stylish as it was functional. Beloved by families, surfers, and world travellers alike, the Type 2 became a symbol of freedom, peace, and the open road, particularly during the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s.
Hilton & Moss are proud to present this beautifully restored 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 15-Window Deluxe. A stunning example of this beloved icon brought back to life with no expense spared.
Imported from Oregon and road registered in the UK in May 2008 (by its one and only UK owner) this Type 2 has been subject to a comprehensive and detailed restoration.
Finished in an elegant Turquoise over Blue-White two-tone paint scheme, this example showcases a concours-quality restoration throughout. The bodywork has been carefully returned to factory specifications, while the paint and brightwork present in as-new condition. Period-correct detailing, including the original-style hubcaps and badging, complete the look with authenticity and flair. Additional details include the extended roof ‘hat’ and bi-parting side doors.
Inside, the craftsmanship continues with a bespoke, Oak interior trimmed in rich mahogany leather, setting a tone of understated luxury. Every element, from the bench seats and headlining to the dash and interior panels, has been custom-finished to an impeccable standard, blending classic design with modern refinement. The rear ‘living space’ folds down to become a sleeping area, whilst ample storage space can be utilised in a well thought out manner. Under the bench seats, 13 amp plug sockets can be found alongside an electrical breaker, with further storage. A Pioneer amplifier and speakers complete the interior.
On the underside, the vehicle has been fully restored and rebuilt from the ground up, with only 200 miles covered since completion. Mechanically, the bus is in outstanding condition, offering a smooth and engaging drive with the charm only a properly restored air-cooled VW can provide. The engine has been uprated to a 1,641cc flat-four, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.
A summary of the restoration includes:
- Full body restoration
- Chemical strip and e-coating
- Full body respray
- Engine and gearbox upgrade and rebuild
- New braking system with disc conversion
- Independent Rear Suspension conversion
- Dropped spindles for lowered ride height
