Description
Hilton and moss are delighted to bring another very well sorted classic Mercedes-Benz to the market. Finding a well-kept Mercedes W108 can be hard. The cost to restore is well in excess of the cars end value which has led to many deteriorating as the years go on. Finding a 280SE 3.5 W108 is even harder with the limited production run and so little cars surviving the test of time. It is even rarer to find one in such a desirable colour combination of DB350 Mittelblau complimented perfectly with a light grey half leather interior. The current careful custodian spent 5 years searching for this specific colourway. This beautiful W108 did not start its life in the US like many left hand drive variants but in fact was purchased new in the Netherlands in 1971 and is thought to have been owned and loved by the same gentleman up until 1985 when he sadly passed. The children of the deceased could not bring themselves to sell the beloved Mercedes and so it was put into storage in a heated garage until 2016 when the family were finally persuaded by a local mechanic and family friend to sell the car on. It was at this stage the new owner and mechanic decided to give the vehicle a much needed-fresh. All new fuel & brake lines were fitted, the engine was recommissioned and panels replaced where the rust was beginning to show. It was then resprayed in its original colour code DB350. The car was used sparingly before being sold to the current loving owner and long-term Hilton & Moss customer. The current owner as previously mentioned had been looking for his perfect W108 280SE for sometime before finding this example. Once purchased the car was imported from the Netherlands to begin its new life in the UK. The car was registered with DVLA in April 2018 and since this time the current owner has spared no expense and has lavished just shy of £15,000 on his pride and joy to create a beautiful but useable classic Mercedes-Benz. The work included a full gearbox rebuild carried out in house at Hilton and Moss, the car now changes gear smoothly with ease and is a pleasure to drive. A thorough service including new plugs, leads and a new distributor was carried out to ensure long-term health and perfect running. The interior also received maintenance with a new carpet set, deep clean and the original Becker radio upgraded to bluetooth further useability. Further mechanical maintenance was completed at this time including new sub frame mounts, a new water pump, an alternator rebuild, replacement of hydropneumatic compensator with rear axle spring and finally blasting and powder coating of the wheels with 5 new white wall tyres. During the work countless small detail items were renewed to improve the car whilst always trying to retain the originality of the car. This 280SE has an unrepeatable charming Patina that shows it’s age beautifully. This is by no means a fully restored concours example instead a very useable car that presents very well indeed that can be enjoyed and driven without fear. This is a fabulous opportunity to own a very well kept and most importantly useable classic Mercedes-Benz. The rare 280SE 3.5 V8 W108s do not enter the market regularly, contact our sales team for further help.Specification
