Description
For the true connoisseur of motorsport history and craftsmanship, Hilton & Moss are excited to present a rare opportunity to acquire a very special motor vehicle.
The Jaguar D-Type needs little introduction. Built between 1954 and 1957, it was Jaguar’s answer to endurance racing. A car so advanced, it looked like it had landed from the future. With a lightweight monocoque chassis, aircraft-inspired aerodynamics, and an unmistakable tail fin slicing through the air, the D-Type clinched three back-to-back victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1955, 1956, 1957). In the final year, it didn’t just win. It dominated, taking five of the top six places.
In period, it is claimed that only 75 cars were built. But, in 2018 Jaguar Classic announced they would finally finish what the company started some 60 years ago. That being a run of the final 25 D-Types that were never completed due to a fire at the Browns Lane factory in 1957. With original blueprints in hand, Jaguar would go on to build these final cars utilising original techniques, tools and materials to ensure absolute authenticity and accuracy, just as Frank ‘Lofty’ England - Competitions Manager for the Jaguar Works team – had intended.
Hilton & Moss are proud to present this fabulous Jaguar D-Type for the very first time to the open market, specified and hand-built by Jaguar to a 1956 ‘Long Nose’ Works configuration.
Presented in the striking, yet elegant Pastel Blue paintwork with a complimenting Old English White ‘Lipstick’ and a contrasting Aged Tan leather interior, this D-Type confirms its presence to anyone fortunate enough to witness it. The sleek body shape features the dominant and iconic single tail fin and a large, wrap-around windscreen that encompasses the cockpit. The interior remains entirely driver-focused, with only the most important features present.
Under the large, single piece aluminium riveted bonnet, you’ll find a purposeful 3.4-litre straight-six engine that produces 320bhp in its ‘Long Nose’ specification. With triple Weber 45 DCO3 carburettors and its dry sump system, the car performs effortlessly. The engine is mated to a 4-speed Moss box transmission, sending power straight to the rear wheels. Reaching 60mph in under 5 seconds, and on to a top of speed in excess of 170mph, it is clear to understand why these cars had such a successful racing career.
Having been cared for by one meticulous owner from new, having covered less than 500 miles from new, this D-Type is fully road registered and carries a UK registration identity. Inspected, verified and prepared by Hilton & Moss, this D-Type is the ultimate British sportscar for collectors, racers and enthusiasts alike.
